For the second consecutive year, I’ll be hosting the Lady Warrior Prep program, which is a camp for middle school girls who are thinking about playing tennis for Wawasee High School. This program is for both advanced and beginner student athletes and is extremely important for any girl who wants to compete in high school tennis.
As a feeder program, this has been designed to prepare middle school girls to succeed at the high school level. I will be the lead instructor of this program and will be helped out by some of my finest players.
There have been too many girls try out for the Wawasee High School tennis program without having any experience in the sport. Wawasee is in one of the toughest tennis conferences in Northern Indiana. So when inexperienced players come into the system, they often struggle to compete, as most other teams in the conference have players beginning their tennis experiences at a much earlier age (5th-8th grade or earlier).
The Lady Warrior Prep program’s goal is to change this, to create a better culture of tennis around the Syracuse, Milford and North Webster area.
Every Wednesday night this summer from 6-7:30 PM (except for the week of the 4th of July) we will be running instructional sessions which will feature fun games and drills. Girls will learn the right way to play tennis, from the proper grips to use, to the right swing paths, footwork, mental preparation and many other techniques that will help to build their skills and love for tennis.
The first graduating class of this program featured two girls who started this spring in varsity in their freshmen years.
Note to parents: this is a great starting point for girls to learn the sport of tennis. Girls tennis is a spring sport in high school, so it’s great for (but not limited to) volleyball or soccer players (as both of these are fall sports, so it won’t compete). Besides having a fun time and getting great exercise, your child will experience tennis and its many benefits which include building character, courage, honesty, sportsmanship, integrity, commitment, humility and striving for excellence.
If you’re interested in enrolling your child, please be aware that I’m limiting the class size to 16 girls. Cost is only $40 for 10 sessions (which is basically the price for 1 can of balls per session per student).
